Comparing the 2024 Nissan Leaf SV Plus to the 2024 electric Mini Cooper SE

Car buyers interested in an electric vehicle that is both affordable and easy to maneuver would be wise to put the Nissan Leaf and Mini Cooper SE Electric on their shopping list. Their small size allows you to squeeze into small traffic gaps or park along the curb, which is off-limits for larger vehicles.

The Nissan Leaf is available with a choice of two battery packs, although for this comparison we’ll focus on the more powerful SV Plus model. It offers more kilometers of driving range and more comfort features such as heated front seats and on-board navigation.

Like the Leaf, the Mini Electric SE Hardtop includes desirable features like heated seats, satellite radio, and driver aids like blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. It also has the agility that makes Mini vehicles great to drive.

Let’s take a look at the highlights of the Nissan Leaf SV Plus and Mini Electric.

The Leaf SV Plus is the upper of two available trims in Nissan’s electric hatchback. The base Leaf S starts at $29,280 in standard size, including factory-to-dealer destination charges. This makes it one of the least expensive ways to go electric.

As for the Leaf SV Plus, it costs $37,330. In addition to the longer range of comfort and safety items, the SV Plus trim features a larger battery pack that offers a range of 340 miles. In the Leaf S, the range is up to 249 kilometers.

Highlights of the Nissan Leaf SV Plus

Interior space, luggage compartment: If you plan to regularly drive with more than one passenger, the Leaf’s interior space and cargo volume make it the clear winner. The trunk is more than double that of the Mini Electric.

Comfortable ride: During test drives we were regularly impressed by the easy-going character and driving quality of the Leaf. The suspension easily absorbs road imperfections, making it a relaxing way to get where you want to go.

Surrounding parking camera: The Leaf is even easier to navigate thanks to the surround-view camera that comes standard on the SV Plus model. This is one of those great features that you didn’t know you wanted until you had it.

ProPilot assistance: Based on the adaptive cruise control system, Nissan’s ProPilot Assist driver assistance system provides steering assistance to keep the Leaf in its intended lane. The system maintains a safe distance from any vehicle in front, and can even come to a complete stop if necessary. You get this standard with the SV Plus.

The Mini Cooper SE Electric is available in three trims, starting at $31,895, including destination charge. Standard features on this spicy runabout include an 8.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, leatherette seat upholstery, dual-zone climate control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

Higher models add features such as genuine leather, a panoramic moonroof, adaptive cruise control and a head-up instrument display. The highest trim, the SE Iconic, costs about $37,000. The range for all Mini Electric models is 180 kilometers.

Mini electrical highlights

Nice operation: True to Mini tradition, this electric version of the Cooper 2-Door Hardtop is a pleasure to drive. Attacking turns in this electric coupe are guaranteed to put a smile on every driver’s face. As for car-sick passengers traveling along, they may want to consider alternative modes of transportation.

Premium interior: The Cooper Electric’s cabin has a luxurious feel that you won’t find in many small cars, whether electric or gas. Round gauges and toggle switches add to the Mini’s racy personality.

Retro exterior, smart details: The retro style of the Mini Cooper Electric certainly makes it stand out. There’s no shortage of ways to customize this EV via the extensive color range and exterior addendum. One detail we think is particularly cool is the Mini’s taillights, which incorporate Union Jack flag elements into their design.

The Nissan Leaf and Mini Electric are small in size and priced within reach. They could convince many car buyers to take the gamble and join the EV lifestyle.

We think the Nissan Leaf and Mini Electric make a strong case for themselves as perky electrics for daily commuting or errands around town. However, you want to be sure that these driving tasks take place within a small radius in the Mini Electric. Its biggest drawback is that it only has 112 miles of range, a figure that’s about half the distance you can travel with many electric cars.

The Nissan Leaf isn’t the shiniest and newest electric out there. A renewal last year does not hide the fact that this generation of Leaf dates from 2018. We still think this is the more practical choice of these small electrical appliances. It offers decisive advantages in terms of interior space and loading volume – although we must admit that the Mini Electric is much more playful when you are behind the wheel.
